2007 Australian
National Bush Poets Championships Results- Dunedoo 1-4th March 2007
|
The
small town of Dunedoo is a convenient stop along the Golden
Highway and Castlereagh Highways, after a comfortable drive from
Newcastle Sydney, Tamworth, Coonabarabran or Canberra. Dunedoo
is ideally located on the crossroads to take you north, south,
east or west with easily accessible toilets in the park for
travellers, close to the modern children’s playground, BBQ and
shops. |

This
little town has an entrance sign that welcomes travellers to
‘Where the People make the Difference’ and this is exactly
how it is in this pretty little town of 830 people in the
central west of NSW. This rural community has all the
necessary services including hospital, chemist, doctor and a 15
bed aged hostel, which makes this place, the ideal place to
live.

Dunedoo
has two hotels, a motel, B&B, caravan park, two licensed
clubs and sport to suite all ages, plus an antique shop and a
vineyard and other necessary services.
As
well as a St. Michael’s primary Catholic school, the Preschool
and TAFE, Dunedoo Central School provides a comprehensive public
education from Kindergarten to Year 12, and in 2002, was
identified by the Sydney Telegraph as one of the best value
schools in NSW, with the School Certificate and Higher School
Certificate results exceeding those of both Private and Public
Schools within all of the Western Region.

The
Arts and Craft Festival, is held in
October, attracting entries from across Australia. The Bush
Poetry Festival weekend is held in March each year and attracts
many awarded poets including Australian Champions. This popular
festival is becoming a signature event for Dunedoo, with written
and performance competitions and is not to be missed.
In 2007Dunedoo hosts the National Bush
Poetry Championships from 1-4 March.

The Spring Fair is held first day of the September school
holidays. The Lions Christmas Carnival, usually the Saturday
before Christmas, and the local PAH& I show is held in February
each year, and considered ‘The best one day show in the west’.
Other activities are occurring all the year with the Lions
District convention in early November 2007. |

The
local stock selling yards are still privately owned and are very
much this town’s heart and possibly the largest privately
owned yards in the state. |

Dunedoo is an ideal location for industry with a highway shop
frontage and two hours to the inland port of Parkes. The average
rainfall is 24 ins. with a 400m altitude. A one hour, drive will
take you to larger centres of Dubbo in the west, Mudgee in the
south with Coonabarabran and the Warrumbungle’s to the north and
the Hunter Valley east. Dunedoo has a good water supply and is
the second
largest town in the newly formed Warrumbungle Shire. A combination
of Coolah and Coonabarabran Shires in 2003. |

Dunedoo has a
small museum, a local FM radio station, 101.5, an active Lions
club and a monthly newspaper. A 40 Gate motocross track just out
of town, is of National standard and can cater for 500 people
with hot and cold showers and flushing toilets and a great place
in the bush for a variety of events. With over 40 voluntary
organisations, this town is vibrant and alive. |

Each year ‘Dunedoo
Deserters’ are invited to a get together in Newcastle to see
old friends. This is always held last Sunday in August and all
