BURNING MOUNTAIN NATURE RESERVE

Early explorers assumed Burning Mountain's billowing smoke and peak of grey, smoldering ash was an active volcano. In fact, the mountain's naturally-burning coal seam, unique in Australia, is thought to have been smoking away for over 5500 years.

Getting There

20 km north of Scone on the New England Highway is a park and the start of the walking trail to the  site.

Facilities

A walking trail across the ridge to the east connects the car park to the present area where the seam is burning

The brochure provides a self guided geological tour of the walking track

On the eastern face of the ridge is a viewing platform overlooking the area.

From the viewing platform you can look down into the vents where the smoke emerges.
